Who’s the Boss

Work can be very satisfying, very fulfilling and is God-honoring when done with devotion, dedication and diligence to the Lord. But, work does involve people, and as they say — people can be people! If you’ve been employed anywhere for any length of time, chances are you’ve encountered a boss who wasn’t your favorite person to work for — or a coworker who wasn’t your favorite person to work with.

How was that experience for you? Did you find yourself getting frustrated, saying things maybe you shouldn’t have, talking about them to others…or maybe even quitting that job? While you can’t change other people, you can change your perspective…and often times, perspective is everything.

>>My encouragement to you today is to remember who’s boss!

Meaning, remember who you really work for — the Lord! Keeping that in perspective is truly a game changer. In the Bible we see this encouragement: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving” (Colossians 3:23-24 NIV). Listen to the insightful instructions from the Passion Translation – “Let every employee listen well and follow the instructions of their employer, not just when their employers are watching, and not in pretense, but faithful in all things. For we are to live our lives with pure hearts in the constant awe and wonder of our Lord God. Put your heart and soul into every activity you do, as though you are doing it for the Lord himself and not merely for others. For we know that we will receive a reward, an inheritance from the Lord, as we serve the Lord Yahweh, the Anointed One! A disciple will be repaid for what he has learned and followed, for God pays no attention to the titles or prestige of men.” – ‭‭Colossians‬ ‭3:22-25‬ ‭TPT‬‬

As a Christ-follower, let this Scripture become the attitude of your heart in the workplace. When you look at your work as something the Lord has you doing — in a place the Lord has you stationed at for now, and working for a boss the Lord has put in leadership over you for now — it helps you keep your heart in the right place at your job.

With this heart attitude, you can extend grace and patience to your boss, coworkers, employees, team members, clients and customers. You can go the extra mile at work, when no one is looking, because you know God sees and records your faithfulness. Beyond that, I encourage you to pray for your boss. Pray for your coworkers. Pray for your employees, business partners and clients. And perhaps most of all, pray that the Lord will do a great work in and through you — so you may have joy in your work, and so that His love and His light  will shine through you to everyone you encounter! Practically speaking, first show up to work; second, show up to work on-time; third, keep showing up on time; forth, show up prepared and prayed up to work and serve up (to your boss, manager), serve across (to your peers, partners and co-workers) and serve down and all around (to your employees, team that you lead, your guests, customers, clients and your company/business community as a whole). Friends, be FAITHFUL and FRUITFUL to and for the real boss… Jesus Christ our Lord! Let’s your purpose, passion and productivity of your WORK bring honor, glory and praise to our Lord and His Kingdom. Be one of those faithful disciples who maintain a genuine and authentic heart and mind to work: “So we built the wall, and all [of it] was joined together to half its height, for the people had a heart and mind to work.” – Nehemiah‬ ‭4:6‬ ‭AMPC‬‬

Say This and Pray This Out Loud: “Father, thank You for my job, my natural and spiritual vocation, assignment and opportunity to serve and sow my natural and spiritual labor. Thank You that Your favor surrounds me and I have opportunities to grow and thrive at work. Lord, I pray for my boss, my leadership, my partners, my coworkers, my employees, my team, my clients, my guests and my customers. I ask that You help them prosper in every way. And Lord, I ask that You help me keep the right heart attitude and right mental attitude towards work and at work, and have Your light and love shining and showing through me to everyone around! Enable and empower me to labor and work faithfully and fruitfully that brings great honor, glory and praise to Your Name Dear Lord. Thank You Father for grace to help me in my assignments of work according to Your will, purpose and design. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.”
